New release dates have been announced by Sony for two of its biggest PS4 blockbusters, both coming within the next few months. The release of The Last of Us II had been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak. However, now Sony has officially announced that it will be released on June 19, followed by the release of Ghost of Tsushima, the next game from Sucker Punch, on July 17. This is about a month later than when the release was originally expected.

According to a note on the PlayStation Blog from Worldwide Studios, Head Hermen Hulst says these dates are feasible due to “an ease in the global distribution environment.”

I want to personally congratulate and thank both the teams at Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch Productions on their achievements, as we know it’s not an easy feat to reach the finish line under these circumstances. Both teams have worked hard to deliver world-class experiences, and we can’t wait to see what you think of them when they release in just a few short months.

In December 2016, at its PlayStation Experience event Sony announced The Last of Us Part II with a brief trailer revealing that both Joel and Ellie would return from the 2013 release. The third-person action game again has players commanding Ellie as she strives to survive in a post-apocalyptic world filled with terrible humans and a fungus that takes over bodies.

From Infamous developer Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima is the latest title and a change of pace. Instead of controlling a superhero in a modern city, the open-world game highlights an outnumbered samurai trying to resist the Mongol invasion of Japan in the 1270s. This was seen most recently at The Game Awards 2019. Here a new trailer was premiered along with a display by a live orchestra.

Earlier this month, The Last of Us 2 had been postponed and the release date was not set at the time. Even though it was almost complete that delay was due to the global pandemic. This pushed the game from its May 29 release date. The new date implies it was only delayed by a few weeks.

Back in March, the Ghost of Tsushima has previously been set for a June release date. Even though it hadn’t been delayed along with The Last of Us 2, its release date was uncertain because of the same reasons.
